Melanoma Cancer
The California Oncology Research Institute is an institution that focuses on the treatment and cure of cancer and by incorporating the latest research techniques and by educating the nation on cancer and the treatments that exist, they believe that cancer can be beaten. Melanoma cancer is a form of skin cancer and when skin is exposed to the sun, melanocytes produce more pigments and as such, skin darkens or tans. Moles are caused with clusters of melanocytes gather and although moles are very common, few are considered harmful, and for most people, moles play a little role in their lives. However, when these moles begin changing shape or altering in color, it is a warning sign and this is caused as the normal melanocytes' cells alter or change, this changing the appearance of the mole. When this occurs doctors will surgically remove the mole and send it for analysis and in the majority of the cases the tumor or mole is benign or non-cancerous. However, when cancerous cells are found, melanoma cancer is diagnosed and this type of cancer is considered to be life-threatening.
Melanoma cancer is common and although it is usually found on the skin surface, there have been cases of melanoma cancer in the eye. Usually melanoma cancer occurs in later life; however, there are cases where younger patients have been diagnosed with melanoma cancer. In dark-skinned people, especially African Americans, melanoma cancer is very rare; however, in the few reported cases of melanoma cancer in dark-skinned people, this particular type of cancer was found under the fingernails, toenails and on the palms and hands. The melanoma cancer can spread to other parts of the body and as such, with early detection and quick treatment, melanoma cancer can be contained. Commonly, those with fair skin and those that burn easily in the sun are considered prime candidates for melanoma cancer and there are various preventative measures that can prevent melanoma cancer, such as avoiding midday sun exposure, as well as using a high factor UV protection cream and making use of UV-absorbing lenses, which will block out the harmful rays and protect the area around the eyes.
When melanoma cancer is detected, there are various treatment options for this type of cancer, and the patient will usually need to consult a team of medical professionals, dependant on the severity of the melanoma cancer.
