The California Oncology Research Institute (CORI) is a committed and professional breast cancer research foundation center that is dedicated to curing breast and other cancer through innovative research, early detection, patient education, and state of the art treatments. While there is currently not a cure or vaccine for breast cancer or any other kind of cancer at this time, the scientists at Corigroup are working tirelessly to find one. Corigroup has partnered with the breast cancer research foundation and in turn has added an impressive board of cancer research specialists to their team. Including, Anton J. Bilchik, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.S. whose clinical interests cover surgical oncology, liver tumors/cancers, gallbladder and bile duct tumors/cancers, pancreas tumors/cancers, gastrointestinal tumors/cancers including stomach, intestines, colon and rectum, adrenal tumors/cancers and abdominal sarcomas. Research interests include molecular profiling, ultra staging of gastrointestinal malignancies, laparoscopy and vaccine therapy. Richard Essner, M.D., F.A.C.S. whose clinical interests include melanoma and other types of skin malignancies, head and neck cancers, endocrine cancers, surgery for metastatic cancers and molecular-based imaging for surgery. His research interests include cancer tumor biology, melanoma and other skin cancers, immunotherapy, molecular-based therapies and molecular imaging for cancer. Both of these key physicians are highly dedicated to look for a cure for cancer. Breast cancer affects one in eight women during their lives.

Studies through the breast cancer research foundation has shown that breast cancer kills more women in the United States than any cancer except lung cancer. No one knows why some women get breast cancer, but there are a number of risk factors. Risks that you cannot change include your age, the chance of getting breast cancer rises as women get older. Secondly your genes, there are two genes that greatly increase this risk. Women who have family members with breast or ovarian cancer may also wish to be tested. Third, there are personal factors. Beginning a menstrual cycle before age 12 or going through menopause after the age of 55 increase the risk. Other risk factors include being overweight, using hormone replacement therapy, taking birth control pills, drinking alcohol, not having children or having children after the age of 35. Men can have breast cancer too, but the number of cases are too small.
